Mounting disk as ready only in Windows

Mounting disk as read only is very important in case where hardware write blockers are not available and one has to process evidences in Tools. By mounting disk as read only, possibility of making changes to evidences like disk image can be avoided.

In order to mount disk as read only, we are going to use Windows in-built command line tool: Diskpart. For this follow below steps

Start command prompt with administrator privileges.

Type below command to start using diskpart

C:> diskpart

This will change command prompt from C:> to DISKPART>

List all disk by using below command

DISKPART> list disk

Then select disk, which you want to mount as read only. Let’s say you want to do that for Disk 2, then enter below command

DISKPART> select disk 2

Now enter below command to set disk attributes as read only

DISKPART> attributes disk set readonly

Disk is now mounted as readonly. You can verify that by entering below command

DISKPART> attributes disk

You can also try to create new file or rename existing files/folder, you won’t we allowed to do so as disk is now mounted as ready only

In order to clear read only attribute and make disk writable, use below command

DISKPART> attributes disk clear readonly
